Ternary lithium battery VS LiFePo4 battery

Ternary lithium battery VS LiFePo4 battery

LiFePo4 battery refers to the lithium ion battery with lithium iron phosphate as the positive electrode material and carbon as the negative electrode material.

Ternary lithium battery refers to the lithium battery which uses nickel-cobalt-manganate lithium or nickel-cobalt-aluminate lithium as the positive electrode material and graphite as the negative electrode material. This kind of battery is called “ternary” because the nickel salt, cobalt salt and manganese salt are adjusted in three different proportions.

Shenzhen Meind Technology Co.,Ltd recently released a portable energy storage power supply with built-in ternary lithium battery, also called outdoor power supply or portable power station. But there are many outdoor power sources in the market that use LiFePo4 batteries. Why do we use ternary lithium battery? Because ternary lithium battery also has advantages(as follows) over LiFePo4 batteries.

    1.Energy density

In general, the ternary lithium battery can store more power per unit volume or weight, this is due to differences in electrode materials between them. The cathode material of LiFePo4 battery is lithium iron phosphate, and the ternary lithium battery is nickel cobalt manganese or nickel cobalt aluminum. The difference in chemical properties makes the energy density of a ternary lithium battery of the same mass 1.7 times that of LiFePo4 battery.

   2.Low temperature performance

The performance of LiFePo4 battery at low temperature is worse than that of ternary lithium battery. When LiFePo4 is at -10℃, the capacity of the battery drops to about 50%, and the battery cannot work beyond -20℃ at most. The lower limit of ternary lithium is -30℃, and the capacity attenuation degree of ternary lithium is less than that of LiFePo4 at the same temperature.

   3.Charging efficiency

In terms of charging efficiency, the ternary lithium battery is more efficient. The experimental data shows that there is little difference between the two battery when charging under 10 ℃, but the distance will be drawn when charging above 10 ℃. When charging at 20 ℃, the constant current ratio of ternary lithium battery is 52.75%, and that of LiFePo4 battery is 10.08%. The former is five times of the latter.
